SUNDAY REFLECTIONS: MY WINGMAN
When I started my blog a few years ago, I set a goal to dedicate portions of my day toward writing. However, I struggled to find my rhythm while attempting to fit “formulas” of how others practice discipline.
I’ll set my alarm early and write before starting my work day.
I’ll choose one day out of the week and force myself to write “x” number of pages.
I’ll read a book first for inspiration.
All of these things sound great, but my reality is (and always has been) this: My inspiration flows sporadically throughout the day—laying in the bed at 3 a.m., standing in the shower, driving from here and there, sitting on a beach or in beautiful spaces, listening to music, observing or talking to people—and always on airplanes. Always.
During an international flight to Mexico, I had an aha moment. I had been asking God to help me hear His voice...more. With no internet connection, I found myself gazing at the clouds—marveling at the mystery of it all—when I noticed a warning in small print on the wing of the plane that said DO NOT STEP OUT OF THIS AREA.
Hallelujah. “I hear ya, Lord,” I whispered quietly. I'm not going to step away from you because when I do...when I take my eyes (focus) off you, everything around me seems to feel like a giant.
DO NOT STEP OUT OF THIS AREA. Oh, that was a word for me, which had nothing to do with aviation protocols for mechanics. As much as I fly, I had never noticed these words, but in that moment I equated “this area” to God’s presence, and I heard him say I am your Wingman.
I experienced a sense of peace that I hadn’t felt in a long time, so I snapped the view from my window seat and wrote myself a note as a reminder…to guard my mind…to calm any anxieties…and to stay the course when I am unsure of the next step.
When it feels that all heck is breaking loose (personally or professionally), you’re stuck in a place of blah, sadness or dreams deferred, you’ve experienced loss, your health is posing new challenges or even if all is going well…remember your Wingman. Call on your Wingman to direct your course.
